“Enter into children’s play, and you will find the place where their minds, hearts, and souls meet. ” — Virginia Axline

Hello, I am Ashley. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor in the state of VA. I graduated from Regent University in 2013 and since have obtained certifications in Infant Mental Health, Play Therapy, and as a Certified Child and Adolescent Trauma Professional. I have experience providing counseling services to those all across the lifespan, specializing in children.  A focus of my work has been within the foster care system and with adoptive families. Another focus of my work is helping others see their self worth.

Relationships and community support are a cornerstone to my foundation. I believe relationships are a powerful tool for growth and healing. In sessions with me, your child will experience therapy from a Child Centered Lens. This means I enter into their world to better understand them. The four universal outcomes of Child Centered Play Therapy include self regulation, self esteem, emotional vocabulary, and increased worldview. We will explore realistic ways to take care of yourself and meet your needs as well. When working with older children and adults, I still value the importance of relationship.  There will be a combination of talk therapy and creative strategies to assist in reaching your goals.

I believe connection with your therapist is important. Setting up a phone call with me is the first step.  A brief overview about me is that I became a wife in 2004 and have 4 children. I do have personal experience as a foster and adoptive mom as well. I was born and grew up in Virginia but after married I moved to Arkansas. We have been back/forth a couple times and now in Virginia to stay!   I am a Supervisor for those working towards LPC in Virginia. I am also a Registered Play Therapy Supervisor.
What Does Chameleon Counseling Mean?
In my years working as a therapist I have noticed a common theme. We often feel the need to compare ourselves to others. We often struggle with accepting our strenghts and weaknesses. This can lead to conforming to those around us. It can also lead to denying ourselves and changing to blend in. This can be especially true for developing brains in the adolescent years and early adulthood, those with low self worth, those who have experienced trauma, and those who have had major relational ruptures. My vision for Chameleon Counseling is to explore our roots and family patterns; identify values and beliefs; accept our strengths and weaknesses; and improve our self worth.

Play Therapy

Play Therapy

I am a Registered Play Therapist, which means I have had additional training and continue to receive trainings each year in play therapy. Play therapy can be helpful for all ages to build rapport and trust. I also have training in art techniques and sand tray that I may utilize. I am a strong believer in Child Centered Play Therapy and the amazing therapeutic power. The four universal outcomes of Child Centered Play Therapy include self regulation, self esteem, emotional vocabulary, and increased worldview. Play therapy includes individual sessions for your child and parenting sessions for you and me to meet. Depending on the age and needs of your family will determine the frequency of parenting sessions. Child Parent Psychotherapy

Child Parent Psychotherapy

Child Parent Psychotherapy is an evidence based approach for 0-5. Those sessions include the child and caregiver to help them heal and grow after stressful experiences. The first few sessions I will meet with the caregiver to better understand the family history, strengths, and needs. Then sessions will include myself, caregiver, and child. Those sessions are similar to the child centered play therapy sessions. You can call to discuss more about CPP or find more information at the CPP website by clicking below

Focus on Parenting

Focus on Parenting

Ideally the family is the safe base. No matter what the age I can assist parents with parenting strategies that may include ways to build connection, communication skills, understanding brain development, and discipline strategies. Parenting challenges come along side individual growth, individual reflection, our own "stuff", and challenges that come with every day life. Parenting Support can be in addition to your child receiving services outside of my practice or you may want support and resources to assist in your parenting approach.
